Act Like You Like It!

Okay, doing a list of favorite actors is pretty much a must, and long overdue. This list does NOT include actresses. Because they’re women and shouldn’t be working anyway. No, because actresses will be in a separate list later.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but my list is still definitely gonna be subject to change. I *did* try to put it in order though, FYI. So favorite actors of all time, coming up…

    11) Steve Carrell
    12) Steve Martin

  5. This page is in serious need of some Bruce Campbell lovin’.

Or maybe I’m just a Chinese jet pilot.

  6. 1. Don Knotts
    2. Bill Murray
    3. Christopher Walken
    4. Harrison Ford
    5. Will Ferrell
    6. Chevy Chase
    7. Jason Alexander
    8. James Stewart
    9. Clint Eastwood
    10. Robert DeNiro…..”are you talking to me?”
    11. Thomas Hanks
    12. Michael Richards

  7. Ooo, Harrison Ford… Good call…

  8. I forgot Jack Nicholson,Cuba Gooding Jr., and Jon Voight. I can’t believe no one said Donald Sutherland.

  9. So this is the first time i’m actually leaving a comment on this site .. so be gentle w/ me guys …

    In no particular order:
    Tom Hanks
    Al Pacino
    Robert de Niro
    Will Ferrell
    Johnny Depp
    Harrison Ford
    Morgan Freeman
    Christopher Walken
    Harvey Keitel
    John Cusack
    Sean Penn

There it is .. my virgin attempt – Cz OUT

  10. Oh man, you reminded me of a couple, Cz…

Johnny Depp — may he rot in France — would prob have to make it onto my list. Toward the end, but prob listworthy nonetheless.

Harvey Keitel is the man (“If you get a guy who thinks he’s Charles Bronson, hit him in the nose w/ the butt of your gun…” — paraphrased…) but I think I would have to make him an honourable mention…

Tom Hanks (who quite a few of you seem to like) would def make HM too…

Cz, nice to see another lady who isn’t afraid to yack out on the ol yack-box.

  11. I can’t believe no one said Donald Sutherland.

Donald Sutherland is an absolute acting whore.

  12. So would you say he’s pretty much equal to William Shatner?

  13. Darren, are you confusing actors with their characters? i.e., knotts, richards, even alexander? If not, Adam West has to be on there too! :)
And, don’t toss Shatner back at me — whether it’s Star Trek or Boston Public, he is his same egocentric, histrionic self. :)

Yep, gotta like Ford, and Nicholson would’ve made my top list. Liking Cusack more and more over time. You got Donald, Keifer, …. acting whore — very funny. Like Mel Gibson, too, along with DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman. And although I am not a big fan, Tom Cruise does a real good job with the roles he chooses.

You know, we actually could almost have a secondary list for great actors who are more of the supporting actor variety –

Morgan Freeman, who has been mentioned, but I consider here.
    Michael Caine
    James Earl Jones
    Gary Sinise
    Others

Bill — maybe before the actresses list, we need a worst/least favorite actors list, while this flavor is still in our mouths. And a new poll (have no idea what the current one means, for what that’s worth).

  14. Crap! Gary Sinise is DEFINITELY on my list.

Yeah, supporting actors could def be split out & specified. A lot of the folks on my list would fall into that though…

I say if you wanna add separate lists for worst actors or best supporting, go ahead & add them here, rather than starting several threads that are pretty closely related.

FYI – the upcoming best actress thread will be hard for me to not just make it a sort of “hottest chick” list b/c there just aren’t that many actresses that I really respect for their craft (or even roles). Keep your mouth shut on that (meaning save it for the actresses thread), but there’s something to chew on…

  15. OK, I’m going to follow up my Morgan Freemen with:

    Kevin Spacey

Can’t believe none of you mentioned him!

  16. Actually thought of Spacey when Bill mentioned we should do similar side threads on this one. Spacey IS solid, but in that supporting actor catagory for me.

Yeah, the favorite actresses is going to be tough to do without making it the “hottest chick” list.

  17. I’d have to say that I’d give a nod to the majority of the people already listed. And I’ve got three more to add:

    1. Liam Neeson
    2. James Earl Jones
    3. Alan Rickman

I’d toss in Colin Firth, but his characters have been pretty similar in every role I’ve seen him in.

Question for Bill: Not sure how it would go over on this list, but maybe at a future date we could do favorite voice actors?

  18. Good call on Neeson.

  19. maybe at a future date we could do favorite voice actors?

I think we could definitely do that, although I doubt we’ll get much action on it. I’d enjoy it though, & I think some others too… I’ll throw it in the Topic Pool.

  20. Robert Redford, Dennis Hopper, Paul Newman.
I was going to say Charlie Sheen, but I thought I’d spare you all from laughing hysterically.

  21. What about a list for most talented acting families?? The Sheens/Estevez’s trump the Douglas’s any day

  22. Oh my. Cue Stinky to start a fight defending the Buseys…

  23. Don’t even get me started on the Baldwin Brothers.

  24. The Arquettes is really where it’s at – Rosanna Arquette in Desperately Seeking Susan, Alexis Arquette channeling Boy George in The Wedding Singer. Oscar worthy performances from that fam.

  25. This thread hijacked by:

    John & Joan Cusack.

  26. John & Joan Cusack.

Ah, nice. Good call Seth, although I say that’s mainly b/c of John. Joan is certainly decent, but I’m quite the John C fan.

I used to think he was mostly a one-trick pony, but after seeing Identity, I changed my mind. He still would’ve made my list anyway, but I think it’s just the romantic comedy Cusack that is his “classic Cusack” character…

  27. Oh crap. Vince Vaughn… is so money, baby. You don’t even know.

  28. Has no one yet listed John Goodman? He should have gotten a lifetime achievment award based soley on the strength of his performance in “The Big Lebowski”. Greatest acting performance of all time.

    Others would include:
    Steve Buchemi (sp?)
    Marlon Brando
    Gene Hackman
    Vince Vaughn
    Christopher Walken
    John Cleese
    Robert Duvall
    Samuel L. Jackson
    Morgan Freeman
Phil Hartman was a great character actor.

Quenten Tarratino can cast like none other.

Keanu Reeves is by far the worst working actor; any cast member from the Dukes of Hazzard would be the worst non-working actor

  29. when you say the dukes of hazzard kyle i can only assume you mean dukes of hazzard the movie. cause
Tom Wopat is a star on Broadway
    John Scneider is on Smallville
    Denver Pyle
    James Best
    Sorrell Booke

Those last three their resume’s speak for themselves. Sorrell Booke and James Best (Boss and Rosco) one of the best acting twosomes of all time. I rank them up there with John Candy and Steve Martin.

    Bad actors
    Jason Bigg
    Johnny KNoxville
    Tom Cruise
    Michael Keaton

    Worst Over actors:
Anyone on CSI, Law and Order and any clone of that type of show.

  30. John Schneider + Smallville= L-O-S-E-R
I have to rank John up there with Tony Danza.

Any actor that has no where else to go can always end up on Broadway. And would anyone argue that Michael Keaton pretty much was the best Batman? That’s like saying Christopher Reeve sucked at being Superman. Sorry Kev. However, I will give you the Booke and Best combo…they were good together.

  31. Now that my beloved Broadway has been insulted it’s time for me to stop lurking and post something. Actors turn to TV and movies when they can’t make it on stage. An actor

  32. Any actor that has no where else to go can always end up on Broadway.

Yeah, Darren, I think you officially stuck your foot in your mouth there…

I would have to agree that Michael Keaton was by far the best Batman, but at the same time must play devil’s advocate & point out that part of that may be due to the fact that all the others sucked royally… Regardless, Mr. Mom was surprisingly good as the Dark Knight…

  33. Ed Norton
    Steve Buscemi
    John Cusak
    Will Ferrel
    Kevin Spacey
    Vince Vaughn
    Harrison Ford
    Bill Murray
    Jim Carrey (for Eternal Sunshine)
    Tom Hanks

Michael Caine & Phillip Seymour Hoffman (supporting)

  34. Okay, I’ve taken the liberty of editing my list. I can do this b/c it’s my site, so you can all just suck it.

  35. I am horrifyed at myself for neglecting Jeremy Piven in my “Supporting Actors” list. He’s so money.

  36. I don’t have favorites per se, but here are some performances I enjoyed:
Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men and As Good as it Gets
Gene Wilder in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Chevy Chase in Fletch and Fletch Lives
Leslie Neilsen in the Naked Gun series
Chris Elliott in Get a Life
Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Dedemption
    Donald Sutherland in Ordinary People
Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting
    Michael Richards in Seinfeld
Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon in SNL
Martin Starr in Freaks and Geeks

My Razzie goes to Sean Connery in Finding Forrester: I still remember the commercial for it where he says, “You’re the man now, dog.” Cringe-worthy.

  37. Vote your conscience.

Oooh, I gots to have that!

  38. I forgot …..Tom Scerritt – always liked him.

  39. Can’t stand Tom Scerritt

  40. Yeah, but you’re in love with Mariah Carey.

  41. Chris said:
    Can’t stand Tom Scerritt

    Darren said:
Yeah, but you’re in love with Mariah Carey.

    Owned!

  42. I think as often as Darren mentions Mariah Carey…I think HE is secretly harbouring a crush on her

  43. Another one…..Jack Palance. Which by the way he died today at age 87.

My favorite line of his from City Slickers…..”I crap bigger than you.”

  44. This is so typical:

FYI – the upcoming best actress thread will be hard for me to not just make it a sort of “hottest chick” list b/c there just aren’t that many actresses that I really respect for their craft (or even roles).

Yeah, the favorite actresses is going to be tough to do without making it the “hottest chick” list.

Also, I mock some of your guys’ choices for best male actors including:

    John Cusack
    Robin Williams
    Randy Quaid
    Donald Sutherland
    Will Ferral

All of those guys irritate me.
I would have to agree with these choices stated above:
    James Stewart
    Bill Murray
    Christopher Walken
    Paul Newman
    Humphry Bogart
    Michael Caine
Harrison Ford (I had a crush on Han Solo growing up)
    Sidney Portier
    Colin Firth
    Gregory Peck
    Sean Connery
    Owen Wilson
    Bob Hope
    Cary Grant
    James Garner
    Charlton Heston
    Viggo Mortensen
    John Wayne
AND last but definitely not least:
    Arnold Schwarzenegger

  45. oops, I tried to b-quote the line that Chris stated about female actresses.

  46. First:

    This is so typical:

FYI – the upcoming best actress thread will be hard for me to not just make it a sort of “hottest chick” list

    Followed by:

Harrison Ford (I had a crush on Han Solo growing up)

    I LOL’d @ teh Ironies

  47. Stephan Root

i don;t think he has been mentioned, but he was great in O’ brother, king of the hill, newsradio, office space and just about everything else he has done

  48. I agree, Kev. He’s great.

  49. Ok, I think I’m gonna suck it up and admit that Brad Pitt goes on this list.

He acts a little too full of himself and (probably) cheated on his wife which makes him garbage as far as morality as concerned, but credit where credit is due – the man has talent.

  50. Robert Duvall playes the best grizzled old man. He was great in four christmases, a movie that was lame but better than i expected. The scene where they play taboo is pretty funny

  51. Speaking of grizzled…

This really is a humorous interview: Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman, 2/11/2009

(I’m sure CBS is pulling these like the big networks usually do, so you may have to search yt or the web if this one’s gone already, but you’ll probably find it somewhere.)

Sci Fi Wire worked these up for Bruce’s birthday yesterday. Pics link to the PDF for making your own, and the details you can see on the larger version are pretty humorous if you get the context.

  53. funny story, i was watching tv with karens dad and bruce came on teh tv i said “hey that’s bruce campbell!” then a minute later karen walked in and said “hey thats bruce campbell!”  OK it wasn;t that funny but it was bruce campbel related and i don;t think her dad has any clue who bruce campbell is

  54. oooh, were you watching Burn Notice? Love that show..
