This Random Show

I think for a while now we’ve needed a placeholder for all our random TV show comments. We have designated threads for Lost, The Office, SNL, The Simpsons, and American Idol, but all other comments about all other shows kinda have to get thrown wherever. So that’s what this thread is for — comments about random shows that don’t already have their own threads.

Of course if you want to start a thread about a particular show that you think is popular enough for its own discussion, feel free to do that. Or If there seems to be enough interest in something here I’ll break it out of this thread & start a new one for it.

I’ve gone back & moved a handful of comments from other threads that now probably fit better here, so you’ll see some comments listed that precede this new thread. So do not panic about that. My powers transcend time, so I can do such things.

  3. did anyone watch the reno 911?
i thought it was excellent. Travis Jr. as a carnie, and weigel opening her home as a bed and breakfast, was great.

thought i would let you know

  5. Is it me, or is David Hasslehoff been on alot more lately? I saw him being a judge on America’s Talent show, and now he makes an appearance on “Click”. Which by the way, did anyone else find him really weird actiing on that talent show?? It was almost as if he was taking the place of Paula Abdul judging while she was high. Of course, there was no concrete proof that she was.

Since we’re on the topic, I’m quickly getting tired of all of these shows that are spinning off of American Idol with having judges, viewers calling in to vote, ie, America’s Talent, You Think You Can Dance, etc.

  6. I’m quickly getting tired of all of these shows that are spinning off of American Idol with having judges, viewers calling in to vote, ie, America’s Talent, You Think You Can Dance, etc.

Hmmm… who do we blame for this? Maybe the people who watch them? You can’t watch & then complain. That’s the rule. Give me a freakin Neilsen box. Let my viewing habits affect the ratings…

  7. I admit, I watched one episode of the Talent Show b/c I was curious, but the rest I simply refused. The talent one was bad.

While I’m on a roll with complaining, the “Faovorite Game Shows” with host Ricki Lake of all people, needs to go away. Which, I realize, is a whole different thread.

  8. I thought Ricki Lake ate herself back in the 80s… Still around, huh?

  9. Yes, unfortunately she is back. I could only watch one episode. It wouldn’t be a half bad show if she wasn’t the host.

  10. I second Darren’s opinion. I liked the concept for that show…which is to say, old game shows are way superior to today’s game shows, with the possible exception of Jeopardy! However, there were some serious flaws….

    1) The aforementioned Ms. Lake
    2) It was an hour-long show, which meant that half an hour was spent asking Tim Meadows about the charity he was playing for. And you know how I feel about charity.
    3) One of the games was Match Game ‘73…you simply can’t do that show without CNR.

  11. After showing a marathon this weekend, CC kicked off a new season of Reno 911 last night. Dangle’s “Officer Krupke” audition tape was great, but the Truckee River Killer’s final words upon execution were gold: “Seacrest out.”

  12. on reno i like how all the guys were nervous when trudy said she got the sperm from a asperm bank.

    also good cop, black cop

    niiice

  13. The infomercial with Dangle and Clemmy was money. I thought Kyle was going to pee his trousers.

  14. The infomercial with Dangle and Clemmy was money. I thought Kyle was going to pee his trousers.

Wow. That’s interesting. I was gonna post something about that today but was too busy & forgot. I wanted to point out that Clemmy’s performance was pretty much perfect.

  15. Does anyone else ever wonder why the History Channel does so many shows about the end of the world? Shouldn’t that be on the Future channel. Maybe they just like irony.

  16. I have to say, I’m really enjoying Ugly Betty. While it’s hard b/c it’s on the same time as My Name is Earl & The Office, it’s totally worth taping (ok, I don’t have DVR like the cool kids) one or the other.

  17. I liked the first two episodes of Ugly Betty, but I feel like the last couple episodes haven’t been as good. It’s seemed like it’s been less and less worthy of the flip back during Earl & The Office commercials. What do you think? Have you noticed any difference?

  18. Anybody see The Naked Trucker and T-Bones? I missed it last week – wanted to know if it was worth checking out.

Speaking of Todd Packer, I think he’s coming back to The Office next episode.

  19. I tried to watch an episode and didn’t make it through. It was like: bad joke, laugh track, repeat. Maybe you just need to have a certain sense of humor for it.

  20. Thanks – I might forgo watching it, then.

  21. Anybody see The Naked Trucker and T-Bones?

Ky, I appreciate you posting this regardless. I hadn’t heard of this show, & I like Koechner enough that I’ll check it out. Can always have the DVR pick it up & trash it later if I don’t like it. Next showing (rerun) is tonight at 11:00, BTW…

  22. Wow, Scott, you were right. Naked Trucker is pretty much unwatchable. What a disappointment. Even Will Ferrell’s appearance didn’t help it.

Maybe I’m slow, but I didn’t recognize the trucker at first either. It’s Mr. Rosso from Freaks and Geeks:

  23. Okay, I need to bring it back to T-Bones… Anybody else tried it, and have you tried it more than once? It isn’t good by any means, but I’m finding I like Koechner in a Chris Elliot kind of way — he’s funny even if the material itself isn’t funny. & again, the material is not funny. But I find I like to just sit & watch him.

(Conveniently edited out the naked trucker…)

  24. Has anyone been watching FX’s Dirt with Courtney Cox? They replaced Nip/Tuck’s time slot with it and built it up so much I figured what the heck? Might as well watch it. It is really good.

  25. I caught a new Japanese import on G4 last night. If like watching asians run around an obstacle course, even if it’s not silly like MCX, then you should check out Ninja Warrior (called Sasuke in Japan).

  26. has anyone watched “The Winner
it is a poor man’s Get a Life but i always laugh at the show.

  27. Anyone else have an appreciation of Alan Kalter aka David Letterman’s studio announcer?

    Here’s a taste:

  28. i liked it a few years ago when he would do a presedential election update and then just sing “who let he dogs out”

  29. Speaking of Jeopardy… I just learned that September 19th is “national talk like a pirate day.” Aaarrrrrgh! (And yes.. Alex did the pirate voice) So mark your calendars..

  30. September 19th is “national talk like a pirate day.”

Yes, made popular by the great Dave Barry.

  31. So last night I mentioned a TV show called Kid Nation and seems like no one else had heard of it before. Maybe that’s because it’s on a network station and who watches those anyways.
Well, in case you’re wondering if I created Kid Nation from a dream or if it’s real…
    link –> http://www.cbs.com/primetime/kid_nation/
I love how they bring in all the kids on a school bus. I’m sure the kids wouldn’t understand a charter bus or how that would have worked.
If you watch the video that automatically loads, I’m sure there is much more to be said.

  32. So last night I mentioned a TV show called Kid Nation…

I’m really disappointed in myself for watching that video… I will say three things though:

    1) The first few seconds of the video implicitly promises me snake bites, so there’d better be a brat with venom in their leg by the end of season 1
    2) $20k buys a kid a lot of video games
    3) For some reason I laughed out loud and very hard at the kid with the crippled brother

  33. Kid Nation –> We already knew that you had no heart for kids and your #3 comment proves it. Although I did find it funny that the hispanic (?) kid was quoting Martin Luther King Jr. for equal rights.
Maybe we can have a get together later on in the Fall and watch Kid Nation before a Mr. T’s challenge (if that’s still on). (Insert Smiley Emoticon here)

  34. CMT this fall has a new show called “celebrity bull riding” well thats not the exact title but you get the gist of the show.
well anyway it stars vanilla ice and just for mike it has “nitro” from american gladiators, well i assume he is a gladiator how many nitros are there?

  35. I’ll go ahead and assume no one else watched celebrity bull riding. So out of 14 stars i give it a 12.

It shows how tough it is to ride a bull and how hard life is when you are washed up and desparate for attention at the same time. It includes some inside tips that someday you m,ight use if you ever find yourself mounted up top of a bull. And a little spoiler alert Leif Garrett already quit, and stephan baldwin got stomped, i don;t know if he survived or not because that was the last thing they showed, so we’ll have to tune in next week.

  36. I’ll go ahead and assume no one else watched celebrity bull riding. So out of 14 stars i give it a 12.

    I am not saying I watched this…but if I did..I agree with you. :-)

  37. http://abc.go.com/fallpreview/cavemen/
I hope this lasts longer than Freaks and Geeks. I really appreciate irony.

  38. i know there is a thread for kid nation but clearly this has to be parent of the yaer.

    http://tv.yahoo.com/kid-nation/show/41733/news/urn:newsml:tv.ap.org:20070823:kid_nation_complaints

she can quit complaining because she has to be stupid to think that setting up a town of kids was a good idea in the first place.

  39. so again i assume i am the only one who watched celebrity bull riding this weekend. Well this was the finale and it was real good. very intense even for a guy who has never really liked bull riding. I’m still not sure why anyone would want to ride a bull. but the show was good.

  40. Rodeos are very fun to go to. I can’t say that I’ve watched one on TV recently though… The only part I can’t stomach is the calf roping. I find that cruel. Yes, I eat beef constantly, I’m okay w/ the whole food chain there, but I don’t like watching those poor calves getting jerked so hard by the neck.

In related news, while looking up whether the flank strap really chaffs or otherwise irritates the bull’s junk, I found this picture that I find humorous for some reason:

  41. do you think black cowboys are funny?

  42. do you think black cowboys are funny?

Well a little, I guess. But there also seems to be a proportion issue too.

  43. Does that guy look a little bit like this dude?
Hope someone else notices it too or else I am offically racist.

  44. Speaking of Jeopardy… I just learned that September 19th is “national talk like a pirate day.” Aaarrrrrgh! (And yes.. Alex did the pirate voice) So mark your calendars

that is today so keep that in mind

  45. Mary, I immediately thought “Tim Meadows” too. But I am in fact a racist, so that doesn’t bode well for you.

  47. HBO’s picked up the aussie series Summer Heights High. It looks pretty decent. I obviously have a soft spot for mockumentaries though, and actors playing multiple characters.

    Here’s the first ep:

    Season 1 Ep 1 Part 1
    Season 1 Ep 1 Part 2
    Season 1 Ep 1 Part 3

  48. has anyone watched “30 days” wioth morgan spurlock? his last one he spent 30 days in a coal min ein west virginia. It was pretty good, even though i think morgan is a little over dramatic, i thoguht it was very entertaining, and i learned a lot about coal mnngint that i diodnt; knwo

  49. wow Kev…did you type in the dark? :)

  50. a new show on spike called “Factory” I think it would be worht checking out. The pilot was kind of funny, it had its moments anyway. It kind of copies the “always sunny in Philadelphia” type of show.

Also it star David Pasquesi of Strangers with Candy fame. He lives with his ex-wife and his ex-wifes stepdads sisters daughter, who is a 21 year old hot asian.

  51. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XhS80rwjIg

this is from “the state”, and led me to say “ahh yeah” a whole lot in high school. If i’m not mistaken that is Thomas Lennon (JIm Dangle) on the right.

  52. this was on family guy last night, BET’s nature show.

  53. Kyle said (over here):
I saw an episode of the Chocolate News a couple days ago and it was very solid.

Kyle, on your suggestion I gave this a try. Here’s the thing:

    1) I like David Alan Grier an awful lot; I’ve always loved his over-acting facial expressions.
    2) While the episode was funny at points, it was rather low-brow the majority of the time.
    3) Does that make me racist?

  54. Yes

  55. You Flight of the Conchords fans (Mel, Julie, looking at you) may want to check out the first episode of season 2.

  56. YAY! I wonder how I could have missed that the first episode was going to be online? I also just realized I’m going to have to find someone else with HBO now that you have moved… or maybe Santa will bring me HBO… must go to mall to tell him..

  57. Does anybody watch 24? I watched a few eps from the first DVD a long time ago and it’s sort of been on my to-do list ever since but I haven’t gotten around to it. FOX is pulling out all the stops for its premiere this season though and I’ll admit it’s got me curious again…

  58. There is a show on Trutv called “principals office” where they actually tape kids who have been sent to the office. this clip was funny becasue it reminds me of kids i know. They are such smart asses., the ending is good too.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyiTHhtaJgg

  59. this show on VH1 the “tool academy”
was pretty funny too, well the begining was anyway.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpGWjN0Tf2k

  60. I’m a big 24 fan. I think I only watched a few of the episodes in seasons 1 and 2 but I’ve been hooked since season 3. It’s pretty intense at times and makes you wish that we really did have a Jack Bauer working for our government. Of course, it also helps that Keifer’s voice alone makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

  61. Kiefer does indeed have a unique voice. I don’t know that it makes me warm or fuzzy, but it’s very recognizable. I also like it when he yells at me in Call of Duty 5.

  62. I’m dangerously close to dedicating a thread to 30 Rock. DONE

  63. If you didn’t watch: Conan’s last Late Night show

Best parts were releasing Abe Vigoda into the wild and the clip where he plays old timey baseball.

The ending where he’s thanking people is extremely long but it’s worth it to hear him choke up.

  64. Nice American Dad quote:
    “Kevlar vest?” “Check.”
    “9mm?” “Check.”
“Whaddya do to yourself before you wreck yourself?” “Check.”

  65. Yeah, that’s pretty good, Scott.

I just watched the new Reno 911! from this week (minus Garcia and Clemmy this season) and it wasn’t that great. It would be hard enough just losing characters, but adding new, lame ones really makes it kind of sad. I don’t know if Dangle, Trudy and Jr. can carry it…

  66. i thought the one new guy was good…his scene with terry as his informant was pretty funny.

  67. Scott… there was audible laughing when I read that American Dad quote… all day long we end up throwing some form of the phrase “check yourself before you wreck yourself” toward the kids in our class. (Of course I told my brother that and he reminded me of all of the following lines that Cube says are “bad for your health” and I realized it may not be kid friendly.. ooops…)

  68. Oh man, so I have only watched the first 30 minutes of the preview special of Glee, and it is already so, so awesome. Too bad it doesn’t officially premiere until the fall.

  69. I have only watched the first 30 minutes of the preview special of Glee, and it is already so, so awesome.

Well I don’t know what this “Glee” is, but without bothering to look it up I’m gonna go ahead and assume chick show.

  70. It’s like an amazing musical in tv show format.

Okay, well honestly it is like High School Musical in tv show format and without Zac Efron. Only a lot funnier.

  71. I hope you all got a chance to watch Obama command Stephen Colbert to shave his head on his show from Iraq tonight.

  72. I keep forgetting to set the dvr but I watched all the eps of Mike Judge’s new cartoon, The Goode Family, on ABC’s website.  It’s pretty solid, if for no other reason than b/c the subject matter is ripe for comedy/abuse.  And although the show doesn’t really have any strong characters apart from the dad (Judge), I think they did a good job with casting.  And coincidentally, Lindsey Weir from Freaks and Geeks (Linda Cardellini, who also voices the daughter in Goode) turned into a bit of a hottie:

  73. http://www.comedycentral.com/tosh.0/

this show on camedy channel wasn;t too bad, it is kind of a rip off of the soup though

also i have alwaysthought linda was cute since freaks and geeks was on.

  74. Norm MacDonald was on Conan last night and he was good as always.  It made me want to see this old clip of him on Conan though. (I thought I’d posted this before but I can’t find it…)  It’s kind of a long clip but it’s worth it.

    “Box-office poison”

  75. here are a few clips from tosh.0 this episode was pretty funny. He deos a “web redemption” thing for people who have embarassing videos on the internet, he did one with caitlin upton and afro ninja, and this with scarlett takes a tumble, i thoiught it was pretty good, teh the second is a video of different people ruining the star spangled banner

    http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=232087&title=web-redemption-scarlett-takes-a

  76. I’m going to predict that The Colony will fall into the “could’ve been cool but they screwed it up” bin.  But I will break my “no reality TV” rule and at least give it a try, simply b/c I’m a sucker for anything post-apocalyptic in nature.  But here’s why it will be lame, and coincidentally, I would say these are common mistakes in reality TV (semi-reality in this case?):

    1.  The situations will be too controlled and convenient.  Materials will be planted and leading.  No one will be in real danger, which completely changes the “experiment,” if you can even call it that at that point.
    2.  There will be unnecessary drama, and in fact, participants will have been chosen in the right combination to create this drama.  (This is interesting subject matter in this case; don’t bog it down with drama.  In a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested Colony, there won’t be time for personal relationships and drama.)
    3.  They won’t portray zombies fairly, or even at all.  (This is a problem with nearly all reality TV shows.  Exception:  The Osbournes.)
    4.  It will become frustratingly obvious that there’s no point to any of this.  What’s more, there will be some not-so-hidden liberal message about war and conservation and crap.

  77. In relation to Bill’s previous entry, an episode of The Colony has this description : “Cordoned off in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse, they must secure shelter, filter water, and defend their new home from thieves.”

Who are these thieves and where can I get into this action? Sounds like fun, stealing someone’s homemade coffee pot. Could be a little too Gilligan’s Island-ish.

  78. Mary said:
    Who are these thieves

Exactly.  This is the point I really started rolling my eyes.  Yes, in a post-apocalyptic world you would most likely have to deal with raiders (and zombies).  But you can’t possibly simulate this for a TV show.  Everything changes when you know you aren’t really in danger.

  79. I love the concept of “Shovin’ Buddies”
    http://www.hulu.com/watch/73584/family-guy-commercial-interruption

  80. Somebody’s makin’ a joke.  Forget it.

  81. http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=238859&title=motorcycle-granny

funny funny video, the commentary is good but the video is wonderful

  82. since noone watches tosh.0 here is another clip from it
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5hy2fCASyw&feature=response_watch

  83. Yeah, Kevin, that Been Had Money business is pretty good.

  84. Does anyone else watch Better Off Ted?  It’s a comedy about this research and development company called Veridian Dynamics.  At least once an episode they air a commercial for the company and some of them are pretty fantastic…

  85. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNfSQA6ZRsc

how do you denfend against the jew?

  86. how do you denfend against the jew?

Yeah, Borat’s racism is pretty funny.

    *claw*

  87. I’ve been giving Spaced another try recently (I’d watched a couple episodes a while ago but got distracted by other things) and I think it’s a fantastic show.  Unfortunately though it’s another example of how short-lived a lot of British comedies are (14 episodes total), so I’ve been trying to ration it a bit.  But if you liked Shaun of the Dead, you’ll recognize some faces (including Simon Pegg), although the comedy is much faster paced (a la Scrubs, maybe?).  And I realize that I’m prone to some odd crushes, but I think Daisy is absolutely adorable.

    I love you, Boss Hogg.

  88. Obviously the reason to watch Fawlty Towers is John Cleese.  But Manuel is a fantastic character too.  Here’s a nice compilation.  Quite frequently I get “I speak English. I learn it from a book” stuck in my head.

  89. can we not all agree that “Tool Academy” is the best reality show on TV?

  90. I’m a handful of episodes into AMC’s Breaking Bad, and so far I’m rather impressed. Without telling too much: BB is about a HS chemistry teacher who can’t make ends meet and really needs money for his family, so he starts making meth, partnering up with a dropout from his class who has gotten into dealing. The show stars Bryan Cranston, who was the dad in Malcolm in the Middle. I always liked him in that show and the other times I’d encountered him, so based on that and the plot I gave it a shot. The content is rather adult, mostly due to some very graphic details about drug use/making, but also due to some extremely disgusting stuff pretty early on. But regardless, it’s a nice piece of television work so far, and I’m glad I looked into it.  From what I’ve seen, I highly suggest it, with a disclaimer for the aforementioned content.

(Seth, thanks for bringing up this show multiple times. I’m past the gross part that I think did you in.)

  91. Which episode, Scott?  It’s making me choose one.

  92. It’s episode 106: Rock Show.  I think it will eventually go to the right one after the commercial.

  93. Thursdays at the moment are a pretty ridiculously good night o’ tv watching, and 30 Rock hasn’t even started yet.  On Tosh.0 tonight he was making fun of a clip in which a large woman tried to ride a horse and he was like, “I think I’d break my own legs if Gilbert Grape’s mom tried to ride me.”

  94. Thursdays at the moment are a pretty ridiculously good night o’ tv watching, and 30 Rock hasn’t even started yet.

I agree.  It’s been a very long time since we’ve had this kind of lineup, on one night, spanning multiple networks.

  95. Scott said:  On Tosh.0 tonight he was making fun of a clip in which a large woman tried to ride a horse and he was like, “I think I’d break my own legs if Gilbert Grape’s mom tried to ride me.”

    http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=252257&title=horse-ride-breakdown

WARNING: CRAPPY FORD TRUCK COMMERCIAL, also for some reason the video was playing and words to other videos were playing at the same time…very annoying, but if it works it was hilarious

  96. Lisa and I grew up with one of these guys and have stayed good friends… it’s kind of cool thinking he might have a series…
    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i7caa1009729f4158b36bd651b3529b87

  97. yeah that is kind of old news, sad though.

One more show however that i’m starting to enjoy is “Modern Family” on ABC on wednesdays, i didn;t care for the first episode but after being encouraged to give it another try it has been pretty solid.

  98. 10:35 to 11:17 is pretty solid:
    http://www.nbc.com/community/video/episodes/?vid=1177762#vid=1177762

Also, I think 30 Rock has its own thread but since I’m here:
“There is an old African proverb which I made up…” -Al Gore

And in the same episode I’m pretty sure Kenneth used two fingers on one hand and three on the other when using air quotes

  99. This week’s Parks and Recreation was a pretty good indictment of the crap that often passes for journalism.  “No mole-gate”.

  100. So I’m going to just take the bull by the horns and admit that I was infatuated with NBC’s short reality competition show called “The Sing-Off”. There were only about 4 episodes. 8 A capella teams competed for a Sony recording contract and a big check. There was definitely some grade A cheese involved, but I still loved it. Like all the stupid talent shows, there were three judges. One of the guys from Boys II Men, a lady from The Pussycat Dolls, and Ben Folds (who I think I may have a slight crush on). Not too bad. Nick Lachey was the host (hahahaha…I’m sorry, that’s actually kind of sad). Anyways, I think the producers of the show did a good job with this one song they all sang in the beginning of one particular episode. It has been stuck in my head and I can’t get it out. Help!

  101. I thought Conan went out with class.  If you haven’t seen it yet, watch the full episode here.  And even if you don’t like Conan, it’s worth watching just to see Will Ferrel’s costume.  That clip from the episode is here, if that’s all you wanna see. I suggest watching the whole show though. It was very good.

  102. Every Day Normal Guy
    Also, Daniel Tosh is amazing.

  103. I said last fall:
I’m a handful of episodes into AMC’s Breaking Bad, and so far I’m rather impressed.

This is one of the better shows I’ve seen lately.  I finished up season 1 pretty quickly and have been patiently waiting.  Season 2 finally came out on DVD last week, and season 3 starts this weekend.  I’m four eps into the 2nd season and I’m having the DVR pick up the current season so I can change over once I’m through these dvds.  I’m trying to ration but it’s hard.  The writing is very good, and Bryan Cranston is fantastic.

  104. There’s a new show in BBC America called Survivors. If you like Pandemic films, you might like this one. There are a lot of interesting characters and people looking for lost relatives, government conspiracy and so forth.

  105. I thought that this week’s Community has been the best so far. “Self inflicted friendly fire”, good cop bad cop movie sequence, “aggitating my sciatica”, Pierce’s Buddist level 6 costume and meteor wand. I’m loving Ahbed for sure, my favorite character on the show so far.

  106. Louie on FX tuesdays at 11  is worth checking out. I thought they were pretty funny. This weeks episode guest stars ricky gervais
