| General Questions:
Q: Are you the Bill Johnson I know?
A: Probably not. There are a lot of us. And most likely, the Bill Johnson you know has better things to do than this.
Q: Who are these people posting on your site?
A: All users know me in some way, although they may not all know each other.
Q: Did you write all of this?
A: I write the majority of the new posts, but sometimes other users start ones too. The author is stated at the top of each post. Most users contribute to existing threads by posting comments, and I do as well.
Q: There’s a lot here. Where do I start?
A: The Most Commented tab at the top of the home page will give you an idea of which threads have generated the most conversation. I’ve also listed on the front page some threads that I think are noteworthy and particularly enjoyable. These threads are listed in the home page sidebar under Manager’s Specials.
Q: How do I participate?
A: Each thread has a Comments section at the bottom, and this is where any conversation related to the post takes place. But to comment on a thread you must first log in. Once logged in, a text box shows at the bottom of the post page. Type your comment pertaining to that post and click the Submit button.
Q: How do I get a bill-johnson.com account?
A: Currently I am only registering users who know me to some degree, whether in real life or online somewhere else. So if we haven’t met, I suggest you contact me through other social networking sites or through this site’s Contact page. |
Site Functionality Questions:
Q: What is the Unread Comments section in the sidebar of the home page?
A: This feature shows you which threads contain comments that you haven’t read yet. Unfortunately this is determined by browser and not by user, so a logged-in user reading the site with different browsers will not find this helpful. Additionally, multiple users sharing one computer’s account and browser may find this difficult to leverage. For most users, though, Recent Comments is the primary method of staying up to date with current discussions taking place in older threads.
Q: How do I add a link to text in my comment?
A: The easiest way to make a word (or words) a link in your comment is to type out the comment and then go back and highlight the text you want to be the hyperlink. Once the text is highlighted, click on the link button in the comment tool bar. (This button looks like a chain link.) This will open a small window with some options. Paste your link into the top field (#advanced_dlg.link_url) and click the Insert button.
Q: How to I quote in a comment?
A: Highlight the text from another comment and copy it. Then paste the text into the comment box. Next highlight the text you pasted and then click the quote button in the comment tool bar. (This button looks like a quote symbol.)
Q: How do I insert an image into my comment?
A: When writing your comment and you’re ready to insert your picture, click on the little green tree icon in the comment tool bar. This opens up a window with some fields. Paste a link to the image into the top field (#advanced_dlg.image_src) and click the Insert button at the bottom. To insert an image from your computer, first following the instructions for uploading an image and then use the link address for the uploaded image here.
Q: How do I change my avatar?
A: Logged-in users can change their avatar by clicking on the Manage Profile link in the Access: section of the home page sidebar. At the bottom of this administrative page is the Avatar Upload section, which contains a field and Browse button for selecting a local image file to upload and use as your avatar. Please try to keep the image size around a maximum 110px square. If you already have a custom avatar assigned to your account, you must first delete the old avatar and then go through the browse and upload process. Note: If you have a Gravatar image associated with your e-mail address, this site will use that global avatar automatically.
Q: How do I upload an image or file?
A: From the admin side, which you can access when managing your profile, click on the Media link on the left-hand side. This should present you with a button to browse your machine for the file that you wish to upload. After you select the file and click Save All, the file will upload and then be available at www.bill-johnson.com/upload/%your_file_name%
