Read this comment in contextAnyone been watching Studio 30 (Tina Fey, Tracey Morgan and Alec Baldwin)? We gave it a chance, we wanted to like it, but it was just too poorly written. Baldwin’s character is funny, but not enough to carry the show. Anyway, I think we’re done with it.

Read this comment in contextWell said, Bill. He was a tremendous music teacher and a patient band director. Yes, I’m sure he knew we were cracking up uncontrollably everytime the opening rim shot for “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” was botched, but he never said anything – he was just letting us be us.
Being the director of all of the band’s for the entire school district, from 5th grade through 12th grade is no small task. Organizing elemetary band, Jr. High Band, High School concert, Jazz, pep and Marching bands, as well as all of the solo/ensemble competitions and parades and late out-of-town shows/football games (and not to mention coaching the quiz team) is a thankless job which requires a dedication and passion which few people possess. The fact that he did this for so many years, giving up so many weekends, summers, and evenings, for such a small community school with limited resources and limited musical talent says much about the man he was, and the dedication which he had towards his students. And when your in charge of 50 kids away from home at band camp, you have to be so much more than just a band director – and he did this so well for so many years with so many students.
He truly was much more than a music teacher; he was a friend. The mark he left on the community of Millersport and the students he taught goes well beyond music; he’ll be missed.

Read this comment in contextBill is the most talented poet I know.
I can’t really summarize all of the great stories, but I will just state that three of the funniest things I have ever witnessed have involved Bill:
1) Dropping John Buzby’s unkept Trapper Keeper in the hallway just as the period was to begin
2) The Denny’s Parking lot incident
3) “accidently” tripping at band practice just for the sake of throwing his trombone on the pavement (maybe that was Rusty – well Bill was there egging him on anyway)I have countless other incidents that probably shouldn’t be posted on the internet.

Read this comment in contextMy three favorite guitar players of all time are Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour and Joe Walsh.
Gilmour’s second solo in “Comftorably Numb” is, I think, the greatest guitar solo of all time – gives me goosebumps almost every time.
I also enjoy Eric Johnson’s “Cliffs of Dover” and Joe Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good to Me” and “Rocky Mountain High”. “Sweet Child O’Mine” is pretty good as well.
I saw Kenny Wayne Shepperd in concert opening for Van Halen a few years back and he was very, very good.

Read this comment in contextSeinfeld – I love Seinfeld. I could wax eloquent about Seinfeld for pages and pages, but I won’t bore you. I have seen every episode at least 4 times. Quite simply, it is the greatest television show that has ever aired – period, end of story. Each episode a piece of cultural brilliance with its artestry, precision, and, the true genius of the show, its meticulous attention to details.
The show about nothing was really about something. I read once an article that summed it up better than I could – speaking about the series finale where the four were shipped to jail for laughing at a fat guy while he was being mugged:
“The group had come full circle, adding a new level of existential desperation to their predicament. They’d been in the same vicious circle already but didn’t recognize it; in an insular, uncaring world, they’d acted alone in it, as if they didn’t need or want to relate to others, and then in the end found themselves in a spot where they got their wish — and then continued on as if nothing had happened.”
That’s what the show was really about – four individuals completely disconnected from the world, displaying a lack of committment, lack of sympathy, unwilling to grow as human beings, destined to remain in their rather meaningless existence displaying for all to see mans inherent inhumanity. Only these four highly developted characters could pull this off – and what they pulled off was the most culturally important television show that has ever aired.
Favorite episodes:
The Junior Mints
The Lip Reader
The Dinner Party (“I only carry hundreds”
The Hamptons (if only for Kramer’s reaction to the baby)
The Fussilli Jerry (“That’s my move!!”)
The Wink (“Thanks for mutton”)
The Rye (“I’m terribly sorry, Mr. Ross. One never knows how the gastrointestinal workings of the equine are going to function”)
The Gum
The Chicken Roaster (“Broccoli, why I love . . . broccoli.”)
The Betrayal
The FinaleThe Junior Mints is probably my favoirte all time episode.

Read this comment in contextif a judge orders someone to jail, is a sheriff allowed to release them if he deems so, superseding the judge’s order?
I know a lot of counties have overcrowded jails. In Clark County, where I used to work, my child support offenders would get 30 to 60 day jail sentences, but it was rare that they would spend more than 15 days in jail. If an overcrowding situation exists, the county judges have a standing order to the Sheriff of the county to release inmates if it is necessary to ease the situation. The Sheriff would then use his best judgment as to which inmates to release early. They couldn’t release an inmate if the order specificially stated to not release him/her early, which was apparently part of Paris Hilton’s order.
Here’s an article about the Sheriff who let Paris out early – looks like they have a huge problem in L.A., as you would imagine.

Read this comment in contextBill – it seems you are jaded on our criminal justice system. I think we have the greatest system of criminal justice in the history of the civilized world. It’s not perfect, to be sure. Tremendous inequities exist on the basis of class, race and religion. There are two hallmarks to any just criminal justice system: 1) the system must be open and transparent to the public, and freely available to the press, and free to be scrutinized by the public, and 2) the right to trial by jury must be in place.
The judges who dole out punishment to those convicted of crimes are held accountable by the electorate (or in the Federal system by Congress who has impeachment powers over them). Those who write the laws are also held accountable by the electorate. There may never be a truly fair and just mechanism for doling out correct punishments when we are dealing with man made law, but our system is as near to perfect as has been discovered.
Of course I don’t agree with every penalty that is handed down by a judge – spending 20 to 30 years in prison for a financial crime (a la Jeffrey Skillings) seems to be a bit absurd – order restitution and a significant fine, take his assets, and send him on their way; but oh well, that punishment for that paticular crime was in place when he committed it, so that’s what he gets – I won’t lose any sleep over it.
I agree with Chris’ statement regarding harsher punishments for those in the public trust. He summed it up quite nicely.
As for the death penalty, I’m catagorically opposed. It seems to me that vengance or retribution on a social level is a very poor excuse for the taking of a human life. Studies have also shown that capital punishment is also not an effective deterrent for future crimes; incarceration is a better means at punishing the criminal, while at the same time protecting the dignity of human life.
As for the pizza box wanted posters – these are guys who owe in the range of $50,000 to $100,000 to their families, and who have had all other remedies exhausted. They have warrants for thier arrest, but are unlocatable. It’s a combination publicity stunt and desperate attempt to track down these guys. I guess I don’t have a problem with it. If you’ve made it to pizza box status, you really have had little to no involvment in the life of the child that isn’t recieving the support, so the effects on them would proabably be minimal.

My top 10 – and this is just for the voice, not necessarily their music:
1) Sammy Hagar – no one else is really even close
2) Willie Nelson
3) Waylon
4) Tony Bennett
5) Frank Sinatra
6) Elvis
7) James Taylor
8) Fredericks Mercury
9) John Denver
10) David Gilmour – well, probably a greater guitar player, but I like his voice, too.
