Read this comment in contextPlease, someone explain computers to me. I hated all those geeks in high school who said “you only hate computers because you don’t know how to use them properly”. I know there is a lot of truth to that. But what can you do if my first computer I bought was only 13 months ago, and I still don’t know what the heck I’m doing? I don’t even pay for my own internet access (I’m a rebel).
So, today I figured I should buckle down and go ahead and buy high speed internet. So naturally I go online and look at my phone company’s internet ad. I like what I see, only 24.99/month for a plan that includes the words “lots of online gaming”, and “wireless capabilities”. I proceed. I next am given the choice of purchasing a 49.99$ “modem” or a 79.99$ “wireless gateway”. with a 49.99$ rebate included on both. I go with the cheaper of the two, thinking “I will save money and get the wireless internet I want”, no clue what a modem is. Anyways, as the day goes on, I think “man I hope i did that right, I should call at&t just to make sure.” I talk to Nadine, super nice, says that with modem I need to hook my computer to it…..so it’s not exactly wireless. I think “was it me or did the ad say….ok Nadine, I need to change my order then”.
“No problem, let me transfer you to the shipping dept”
Next up a girl says very monotone “you can’t order a wireless gateway at shipping, that’s sales, let me transfer you…” I said “Wait! I just came from there”. “Ma’m, we can’t order things in shipping for you…blah…blah…blah”.
So, now I talk to Barbara. I tell her my predicament and she says “well, now we have to change mountains of paperwork… you should have called sales first instead of shipping”. …… “okay, tell that to Nadine.” “Who?”. “Nevermind, please just help me fix this… and I still get the rebate right?”
then we get into this little tizzy about how they are only online rebates and she cannot “honor” them over the phone, so I say “okay, I’ll just hang up on you and order it online”, and she replies with “no ma’m, it will only let you order online once, if you try it again it will know….”to make story short, I pay twice for shipping and handeling, loose my rebate, and pay to send back the modem. but now I also need a router or something to play my xbox. Argh. I know all you computer nerds are smiling right now thinking “you are the reason why I have a job…tech support”
terms I still don’t know:
dsl
modem
router
Mbps
IP address: 1 dynamicSo, I wish technology would come up with an internet box entitled “Everything You Need to Play Video Games Online Is Right Here In This Box”. (geeky tech support man included)

Read this comment in contextWhen you make that decision to become a public person you should know that there are certain examples you need to set. With these guidelines set for you and you accepting them when accepting your job you should NOT have a lighter sentance just because your a cop or judge or whoever. You by far should know the guidelines because you are specifically taught them. THerefore I believe you should have a more tough punishment.

Read this comment in contextI agree with what you’re saying, Bill. Every society has their own rules of etiquite and right and wrong. That is how a society helps hold itself together. I don’t really think this has much to do with God as mentioned above. Sure the Ten Commandments used to be hung in courtrooms across the U.S., but most of those commandments seem to make perfect sense – Thou shalt not murder, thou shalt not commit adultery, etc. In order for a society to be able to funtion there has to be boundaries.
It is interesting that America’s “boundaries” are sort getting foggier and foggier. Tolerance seems to be the campaign now a days. I hate the thought of tolerance. People loose their individuality and personal beliefs to adopt such a generic belief of the “world living in peace” something er other. Scripture says “So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (Rev 3:16). Had to get that off my chest.
It is very unfortunate when a person seems to have been judged differently than another, or when the innocent are judged instead of the guilty. But that is the corruption of sin, and why as Bill said “God will ultimately deal perfect justice”.
Another verse to think about “For we know Him who said ‘ It is mine to avenge; I will repay, ‘ and again, ‘The Lord will judge His people’. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:30-31).

Read this comment in contextA few inconsistincies here in this post. Mainly the fact that yes it is bad to judge people, and yet we are all still thinking that “this person’s sentence wasn’t stong enough” yada yada. I do have an issue with letting people go and the government issuing “forgiveness” because it’s all sunshine and butterflies. The fact is that some people murder and might possibly do this again. Not only does someone need to pay the penalty for their own actions, but society also needs to make an effort to protect those who havn’t been murdered/violated in some way. This is not something to blame on Christians or even God, it’s just plain common sense.

Read this comment in contextI was given a red fiestaware place setting for my birthday recently, and when I brought it home I realized I already had that color. I figured that the giver bought it at Macy’s so yesterday my mom and I went to see if we could even exchange it for another color, without a reciept. We were not able to find the exact place setting there; mine had a cup and saucer, theirs had a mug. And, the mug one was a little more expensive. I was worried they were not going to let me switch it but something happened while we were there that some would call a miracle of sorts. Three bats were flying around in the housewares department, frightening customers and saleswomen alike, especially my saleswoman. She had to cover her head with a box while she was at the cash register. I even saw her ring up my place setting for 20$ less than the one I wanted and she didn’t charge me any extra for it. One old customer who was in a wheelchair was having the only salesMAN pick up her items since she didn’t want to brave the bat dwelling.
Anyways, my advice is to always let loose a swarm of bats in a store when you want to return something.

Read this comment in contextThere is something to be said for good service. I do think that there are people out there that really care about what they do and should be recognized. I have two specific instances when I had two really bad days related to work. I usually work two days on, three off; and this was on the morning of my second day after a day from hell, I drove to Starbucks on Sawmill at 6:30am they see me in my scrubs and hostpial badge and seem kind of glad that they aren’t the only ones up at that hour. Both girls and I chatted, one of them handed me my coffee with these words “you know what, we’ll just give you this on the house”. Sure it was just a 2$cup, but what the heck! It made my day.
After another rough 12 hour shift I did not feel like cooking and dragged my best friend to Outback Steakhouse on Sawmill/Bethel. The entire service was great, in fact I asked for a comment card and the waitress brought me the manager… Just told the manager how the food was outstanding (best chicken Cesear salads around) and the waitress was so nice. The guy said thanks and offered to give us free dessert of choice. When the waitress came back up she said something like “oh thanks so much for saying that to him, we’ve been really short lately and today has been horrible. But he just ran back to the kitchen and told everyone what you said, it really pumped him up”. I also emailed their corporate office and a few weeks later recieved about 10 coupons for a free onion blossom…
Even though good service should be a given, unfortunately it is impossible to please everybody, everybody has a bad day. I find it impossible for me to always smile at my job, like the other day when a 20yr old kid was swearing at me because I “didn’t know how to stretch his calf muscle” after working out for 7 hours straight (and yes I yelled back at him for swearing at me and also for wasting an ambulance call for something so ridiculous as “muscle aches”).
In any case, I give Lisa and all other people here affiliated with customer service two thumbs up for keeping that smile no matter how painful.

Read this comment in contextI guess I’ll be the first to comment on Michael Jackson’s recent demise. I’m not going to say anything stupid like “RIP” or “We’ll keep you in your prayers” because he’s dead as a door nail at this point. I will say I oddly felt what most would call “sadness” upon hearing this news today. I do think he was a talented musician. And from a medical standpoint I’m super interested to find out the cause of his death. He was a frail little thing; makes me wonder what underlying illnesses he had we didn’t know about… I guess his children don’t need to worry about hanging over any balconies anytime soon.
