Memorable Cameos (Word Up)

“This is my favorite kind of surprise: mild!”
-Ned Flanders

I’d like to compile a list of memorable guest appearances and cameos from movies, TV, concerts, etc., whether it was a surprise addition that made or broke the entire performance, or just something that you weren’t expecting. I know there are a lot of examples of this kind of thing, and when I come across them I recognize that and appreciate it, but now, after the fact, it generally takes something to jog my memory. So I’d like to start a list here so I don’t have to put extra stress on my brain trying to remember. Plus it’s a good way to share in case some of us didn’t realize someone-or-other was in that one thing, with the guy and the explosions and the goat.

Nothing beats watching a show or a movie and perking up when an actor we love and aren’t expecting steps into frame. But sometimes we completely skip over a movie or whatever, not realizing that someone we like made a guest appearance. So if we happen to be a fan of that particular actor or artist, it might completely change our intentions of whether to watch or listen. And the same could be true for people we dislike. I know there are definitely certain actors I detest enough to boycott great movies, even if they’re only on screen for a minute or two. And then there are also some performances that completely carried bad movies — you’ll even sit through it again just to get to that one scene with that one character and the goat.

So help me out if you would. Post memorable cameos as you think of them.

I’m Just Not Catching On

I’m consistently confused by what the public latches on to. I don’t understand why some things become so popular, whether it’s a show, movie, celebrity, saying, food, etc. Of course I’m sure that to the untrained eye I obsess over some bizarre things, but that’s not the point. This site is for throwing stones at others for doing what I do but in different ways.

So what I’d like to do is compile a list of things we can’t believe caught on, or that we’re annoyed caught on, and maybe also things we’re glad didn’t become popular, or even things that we wish had.

Of course it is your right to stick up for trends that you support, but you will likely be made fun of, and likely for good reason.

Movie Reviews

I should start off by saying I really don’t care for professional movie reviews. They do not affect my opinion, they are rarely indicative of the actual quality of the film, and only correspond to my own preferences randomly. I don’t read reviews, but I can write them.

So by popular demand, here’s a catch-all thread for film feedback — a place to give your reviews of what you last saw in the theater or in your living room (so DVD reviews welcome). Maybe I’ll eventually work in a four-star rating system with pretty little graphics, but for the meantime you all have asterisk keys (meaning number 8 keys). So give us your thoughts and slap the appropriate number of stars on your review too.

I think we can keep talk of upcoming movies over in the Pretty Good Year thread and just discuss movies we’ve seen here.

This Random Show

I think for a while now we’ve needed a placeholder for all our random TV show comments. We have designated threads for Lost, The Office, SNL, The Simpsons, and American Idol, but all other comments about all other shows kinda have to get thrown wherever. So that’s what this thread is for — comments about random shows that don’t already have their own threads.

Of course if you want to start a thread about a particular show that you think is popular enough for its own discussion, feel free to do that. Or If there seems to be enough interest in something here I’ll break it out of this thread & start a new one for it.

I’ve gone back & moved a handful of comments from other threads that now probably fit better here, so you’ll see some comments listed that precede this new thread. So do not panic about that. My powers transcend time, so I can do such things.

Let’s Get (Comically) Physical

Call it low-brow, say it lacks intellect and wit, but I’ll be gah-dah-gawned if the right kind of physical comedy doesn’t make me pee just a little in certain cases. Have you ever seen Chevy Chase fall down the stairs? Did you appreciate Kramer’s cosmic (pun) connection to Mary Hart? Do you have a favourite Stooge? Have you ever attempted the Silly Walk yourself? See what I mean?

So in this thread I’d like to assemble the titans of physical comedy. They don’t have to only be known for that style of humour, but I think we should give props (pun again? not really?) to the folks who put their bodies on the line to make us laugh. Is there a greater gift? I will ponder this as I march around my hidey-hole with no small degree of silliness.

I Like You, But Not In That Way

This summer the tide brings in installment number two (heh, doodie) of Pirates of the Caribbean, forcing me to once again explain how I love Johnny Depp, but at the same time, I really do hate Johnny Depp. You know what I mean?

There are certain people out there who demand our praise for their working life, no matter what kind of idiot they are in their personal life. (Note: This does not apply to Madonna. She’s just an idiot.) Johnny Depp is at the top of that list for me. I think he does a fantastic jorb on camera, but should I meet him in the streets of France I would mercilessly beat him with a pipe. See? I love him and I hate him, but it’s not quite the paradox that it seems. I’m not at all crazy.

This leads me to ask you, dearest reader and confidant, for who do you have these kind of love-hate feelings? Whose political dribble makes you shake you fist in anger, while their art speaks to your soul? Who would you pay $70 to see live, and then another $70 to beat up afterwards?

Vision Test — What’s Wrong With My Eyes?

Another suggestion ripe for picking from the Topic Pool… As suggested by John V, I paraphrase:

Given the response to my post regarding Emmlyou Harris in the Aged Like a Fine Wine thread, how about your list of famous people who are said to be attractive but you think are ugly?

Yes, we all have our own tastes, but beyond that, there are some things that we just don’t get. You look at the celebrity flavour of the week — or maybe they’re a legitimate talent, but you keep hearing about how attractive they are — & try as you may, you just aren’t seeing it. NOTE: I’d also like to tack onto this thread famous people you *do* think are attractive but nobody agrees with you.

So don’t question your sexuality just yet, nervous reader. Post here to see just how crazy you are. Let *us* pull you out of the closet & poke you with our sharp words.

As before, the site strips images from comments during the post process, but if you link to the pic you want I’ll do my ninja thing & I’ll slip it in your comment for you.
