It’s the Little Things

I seem to remember hearing that it’s the little things that make you the happiest. That in this world of colour TVs, stereo boom boxes, and fashion knickers, it’s the simple, often overlooked things that produce real joy in you. I know that sounds lame, and it probably is to some degree, but this is the thought I’m going with so lay off.

I have no intention of getting philosophical or deep, or breaking it down to simple things like basic food or clothing that we American fat cats take for granted. I know we suck here in the take-it-all-for-granted Western world, but that’s a rant for another thread (that I’ll probably never start, so what do I care, talk about it here if you really want). I just wanna know what little things get you every time, which often-overlooked things in life make you happy.

And since all of us here are quirky in our own special ways, I’m guessing our various simple, “little” things are probably pretty different or unique. Or maybe you’ll find that you really love something that someone else here enjoys, but it’s so little that you’ve overlooked the beauty of its wonderful simplicity.

Let me give you an example:

Sun Or The Moon

I’ve asked this question to many people before, but never here, so this may be new to some of you…

As I’ve mentioned, I love the moon. I stare. I sit and stare. Or stand and stare. Or drive and stare. If there is indeed a man in the moon — my love for cheese aside — my tendency to stare could only be described as creepy. And I suppose a little gay.

But I digress… My question to you, dear reader, is this: if you could only see either the sun or the moon for the rest of your life, which would it be? Don’t get too sciencey on me here. The lack of moon will not affect the tide. Not seeing the sun will not affect crops, the earth will not become a frigid wasteland… We’re just talking about what you see.

I See the Moon and the Moon Sees Me…

…God bless the moon and God bless me. Mom used to say that to me all the time at night…

I love the moon. I wanna say that’s no secret. For many of you it isn’t. But for just as many you’re saying, huh? It’s sort of one of those things that you kinda have to get on a certain level with me… I don’t wanna say a certain level of closeness, but more like a certain *kind* of closeness, b/c I know I have a lot of very close friends who don’t really know about my obsession with the moon. But most girlfriends would know what I mean… friends I tend to have the more emotional ties with… I dunno, maybe it’s sort of a “weaker” side of myself that I don’t always let out. (So why am I telling you?) I imagine it being a bit of a curse for WHN. I really don’t know how she looks at it now…

But anyway… the moon. It’s not a scientific interest. It’s not intellectual. It’s purely esthetic. It’s the glow, it’s the shape, the clouds drifting in front of it. It’s the way it lights up back roads, the panoramic exaggeration — how the expanse of the land oddly elongates & stretches out in front of you. It’s the mood, it’s how beautiful she looks under that blue filter…

Once You Go Mac…

… I feel no need to finish the joke. But seriously, the next machine I buy will be a Mac. Of course I’m sure some small part of it is just familiarity at this point. My employer gave me a Powerbook (at my request), and since I work from the home, that’s been my primary ‘puter since last May. I have few complaints really, although my main gripe is a big one…
